tips_and_updates Fix It Yourself

Try these steps before calling. They resolve the majority of common CenturyLink issues.

1

Restart your CenturyLink modem properly

Unplug your CenturyLink modem from the wall outlet and phone/fiber line. Wait 60 seconds. Plug the phone/fiber line back in first, then the power. The modem needs 3-5 minutes to fully reconnect to CenturyLink's network infrastructure.

2

Check if Quantum Fiber is available at your address

Visit quantumfiber.com and enter your address. If Quantum Fiber is available, it's a significant upgrade from DSL — offering 200 Mbps to 1 Gbps symmetrical speeds vs. typical DSL speeds of 5-40 Mbps depending on your distance from the central office.

3

DSL speeds depend on distance from the phone exchange

CenturyLink DSL speeds decrease the farther you are from the nearest central office (phone exchange). If you're 3+ miles from the exchange, your actual speeds may be 25-40% of the advertised maximum. Fiber is the only solution for consistent high speeds at any distance.

quiz CenturyLink FAQ

Common questions answered by our research team.

add What is the difference between CenturyLink and Quantum Fiber?
CenturyLink is the legacy brand for DSL internet and home phone service. Quantum Fiber is the consumer-facing brand for CenturyLink's fiber internet expansion. As fiber reaches more areas, CenturyLink DSL customers are migrated to Quantum Fiber. Both are operated by Lumen Technologies.
add Is Quantum Fiber available in my area?
Check availability at quantumfiber.com by entering your address. Quantum Fiber is actively expanding but remains unavailable in many rural CenturyLink service areas. Current fiber markets include Phoenix, Denver, Seattle, Salt Lake City, Minneapolis, Las Vegas, and 20+ other cities.
add What speeds does CenturyLink DSL offer?
CenturyLink DSL speeds range from 10-100 Mbps download depending on distance from your central office. Most DSL customers receive 25-50 Mbps download and 5-10 Mbps upload. Quantum Fiber offers symmetrical 200 Mbps to 8 Gbps depending on market.
add Does CenturyLink have a price lock?
Quantum Fiber offers a Price for Life guarantee — your monthly rate won't increase as long as you keep the service. Legacy CenturyLink DSL plans do not include this guarantee and rates can increase with 30 days' notice.
add Can I cancel CenturyLink without a cancellation fee?
CenturyLink and Quantum Fiber typically offer month-to-month internet service with no contract for residential customers. You can cancel anytime without early termination fees. Confirm your specific agreement terms when signing up — promotional pricing may include a 12-month commitment.
