tips_and_updates Fix It Yourself

Try these steps before calling. They resolve the majority of common Ring issues.

1

Check Wi-Fi signal (RSSI) in Device Health

In the Ring app, open your device → Device Health → Signal Strength. RSSI better than -60 is good. If it reads -70 or worse, your doorbell needs a Wi-Fi extender — this is the #1 cause of Live View failures and missed events.

2

Enable People Only Mode to reduce false alerts

Go to Motion Settings → Smart Alerts → People Only Mode. This uses on-device AI to only alert you to human motion, dramatically reducing notifications from cars, animals, and shadows while still capturing all events in video history.

3

Hardwire battery doorbells for best performance

Battery Ring doorbells can be wired to existing doorbell wiring (8-24V AC) for continuous power. Hardwiring enables 24/7 recording, snapshot capture between events, and consistent Live View — features not available in battery-only mode.

quiz Ring FAQ

Common questions answered by our research team.

add Does Ring require a monthly subscription?
Basic Ring features (real-time alerts, Live View, two-way talk) are free. Ring Protect Basic starts at $4.99/month per device for 180-day video history. Ring Protect Plus is $10/month for the whole home plus professional monitoring. Without a plan, video is not saved.
add How far does Ring motion detection reach?
Ring Video Doorbells detect motion up to 30 feet away in a 160-degree horizontal field. Ring cameras with adjustable motion zones can be fine-tuned for distance and angle. Ring Spotlight and Floodlight Cam covers up to 30 feet with 270-degree detection.
add Is Ring compatible with Google Home?
Ring works natively with Amazon Alexa for announcements, live view on Echo Show, and arm/disarm commands. Google Home compatibility is limited. For smart home cross-platform use, most Ring users stick with the Ring app as their primary interface.
add How do I share Ring access with family members?
In the Ring app, go to your device → Shared Users → Add a Shared User. Enter their email address. Shared users get the Ring app with access to Live View, recorded videos, and event alerts for the devices you specify.
add What happens if the power goes out — does Ring Alarm still work?
The Ring Alarm Base Station has a built-in 24-hour backup battery for power outages. Ring Alarm Pro adds an optional cellular backup connection so monitoring continues even if your internet goes out. Without Ring Protect, monitoring is app-based only.
