tips_and_updates Fix It Yourself

Try these steps before calling. They resolve the majority of common Microsoft issues.

1

Force restart a frozen Surface by holding the power button

Hold the Surface power button for 20 full seconds until the screen goes black, then release. The Surface will power back on normally. This force-restarts the device when it's completely frozen and unresponsive to normal commands.

2

Two-button reset for severe Surface issues

Hold Volume Up + Power button for 15 seconds, release both, wait 10 seconds, then press Power. This is the two-button hardware reset that can recover Surface devices that won't boot or are stuck in a boot loop.

3

Use Microsoft's Get Help app for Windows troubleshooting

Open the Get Help app in Windows (search in Start menu) to run automated Windows troubleshooters for common issues including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Windows Update, and activation. Get Help can also connect you to live Microsoft chat support directly.

quiz Microsoft FAQ

Common questions answered by our research team.

add How do I recover a Surface that won't boot?
Download the Surface Recovery Image from microsoft.com/surface/recovery for your specific Surface model. Flash it to a USB drive using a USB 3.0 drive and the Surface Recovery Image download tool. Boot the Surface from USB (hold Volume Down while pressing Power) to reinstall Windows.
add Does Microsoft offer an extended warranty on Surface?
Microsoft Complete extended service plans are available for 2 or 4 years of coverage including accidental damage protection (2 incidents per year, $49-$99 service fee each). Plans must be purchased within 60 days of Surface purchase.
add What is the Surface Pro's battery life?
The Surface Pro 9 with Intel chips offers up to 15.5 hours battery life (Microsoft's claim). Real-world usage typically yields 6-10 hours depending on tasks. The Surface Pro 9 with ARM/Microsoft SQ3 chip offers slightly different performance characteristics.
add Can I run Windows on a Surface Pro in tablet mode?
Yes — the Surface Pro's detachable keyboard (Type Cover, sold separately) allows it to be used as a full tablet running Windows 11. Windows 11 includes touch-optimized tablet mode that adjusts the interface for finger navigation when the keyboard is detached.
add Is Microsoft 365 the same as Office?
Microsoft 365 is the subscription version of Microsoft Office. It includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and OneDrive, always updated to the latest version. Microsoft 365 Personal ($69.99/year) covers 1 person; Microsoft 365 Family ($99.99/year) covers up to 6 people.
