Fix It Yourself
Try these steps before calling. They resolve the majority of common Brother issues.
1
Reset the drum counter after replacement
After installing a new drum unit, open the front cover and hold the OK button for 4 seconds until the display shows 'Accepted'. This resets the drum counter — without this, the error message returns even with a new drum.
2
Clean the corona wire for smear issues
Open the front cover, remove the toner/drum assembly, and slide the green tab on the corona wire back and forth 4-5 times. This clears static buildup that causes vertical streaks without any cost.
3
Use the Brother iPrint&Scan app
Download the free Brother iPrint&Scan app for wireless printing and scanning directly from your phone. It also provides setup wizards, troubleshooting, and firmware update notifications.
shield Warranty & Coverage
Brother printers include a 1-year limited warranty covering parts and labor. The drum unit is separately warranted for 1 year or the rated page yield, whichever comes first.
quiz Brother FAQ
Common questions answered by our research team.
add What is the difference between the drum and toner in a Brother laser printer?
The toner cartridge contains the ink powder that creates images on paper. The drum unit (OPC drum) transfers that toner to the paper. Toner needs replacement every 1,000-3,000 pages while the drum lasts 12,000-15,000 pages. They are sold separately.
add How do I factory reset my Brother printer?
Go to Menu → Network → Network Reset → Yes. For a full factory reset, go to Menu → Initial Setup → Reset → Factory Reset → Yes. This clears all settings including Wi-Fi and address book.
add Are Brother high-yield toner cartridges worth it?
Yes — Brother's XL and XXL high-yield toner cartridges typically cost 30-40% less per page than standard cartridges. For printing more than 200 pages per month, high-yield is almost always the better value.
add Does Brother offer a warranty on their printers?
Brother printers include a 1-year limited warranty on parts and labor. The drum unit has a separate 1-year or 12,000-page warranty (whichever comes first). Extended service plans are available through Brother's service network.
add Can I use non-Brother toner in my Brother printer?
Compatible third-party toners work in Brother printers, but Brother doesn't recommend them. Using non-genuine toner can void your warranty and may cause drum damage or reduced print quality compared to genuine Brother TN-series cartridges.
