tips_and_updates Fix It Yourself

Try these steps before calling. They resolve the majority of common Google Home issues.

1

Restart Google Home device via the Google Home app

Open the Google Home app → tap your device → tap the Settings gear → scroll to and tap 'Reboot'. This sends a proper software restart command. If the device is fully offline, unplug it for 30 seconds and plug back in.

2

Check Nest Cam power and subscription for offline feeds

Nest Cam wired models should be constantly powered. Battery models show a battery icon in the Google Home app — check the charge level. For feed issues, ensure your Google Nest Aware subscription is active (required for event history). Free tier shows only live view.

3

Reconfigure Nest thermostat wiring if heating/cooling stops

In the Nest app or Google Home app, go to your thermostat → Settings → Equipment. Verify the wiring labels match your HVAC system (Rc, W1, Y1, G, C wires). An incorrectly wired C-wire is the most common reason a Nest thermostat stops controlling the HVAC.

quiz Google Home FAQ

Common questions answered by our research team.

add What is the difference between Google Home and Google Nest?
Google Nest is the brand for Google's smart home hardware (cameras, doorbells, thermostats, speakers). Google Home is the app and platform used to control all Google Nest and compatible smart home devices. The product line was renamed from Google Home to Google Nest for hardware in 2019, but the app retained the Google Home name.
add Does Google Home work with Amazon Alexa?
Google Home and Amazon Alexa are competing platforms that do not directly integrate. However, both platforms support many of the same third-party smart home brands (Philips Hue, TP-Link, Nest, Ring — although Ring is Amazon-owned). Matter devices work across both platforms simultaneously.
add What is Matter and does Google Home support it?
Matter is an open smart home standard supported by Google, Apple, Amazon, and Samsung. Matter-certified devices can be added to and controlled by Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Samsung SmartThings simultaneously without choosing an ecosystem. Google Home added full Matter support in 2023.
add Do I need a Google Nest Aware subscription?
Nest Aware is optional but required for event history, activity zones, and facial recognition on Nest cameras. Basic Nest Aware is $6/month (30 days of event history). Nest Aware Plus is $12/month (60 days event history, 10 days 24/7 continuous recording). Without it, cameras only show live view.
add What is the Nest Learning Thermostat?
The Nest Learning Thermostat ($249) learns your temperature preferences over 1-2 weeks and builds an automatic schedule based on your patterns. It connects to your home Wi-Fi for remote control via the app, shows energy usage history, and can be controlled by Google Assistant voice commands.
