tips_and_updates Fix It Yourself

Try these steps before calling. They resolve the majority of common Lorex issues.

1

Check PoE cable quality for 'no signal' issues

Lorex PoE camera 'no signal' errors are frequently caused by low-quality Ethernet cables or runs over 328 feet (100 meters). Use Cat5e or Cat6 rated cables and test cable continuity with a cable tester before assuming the camera is defective.

2

Enable P2P in NVR settings for remote access

Log into your Lorex NVR locally, go to Setup → Network → P2P and enable P2P mode. Then scan the QR code with the Lorex Home app. P2P bypasses the need for port forwarding and makes remote access setup much simpler.

3

Format hard drive directly from the NVR menu

If the NVR reports a hard drive error, go to Setup → Storage → Format. Allow 5-10 minutes for formatting. Use Lorex-recommended surveillance-grade hard drives (Western Digital Purple, Seagate SkyHawk) — desktop drives fail much faster in 24/7 recording environments.

Warranty & Coverage
Lorex cameras and recording systems include a 1-year limited warranty. Hard drives included in Lorex systems carry the hard drive manufacturer's standard warranty (typically 3 years for surveillance-grade drives).

quiz Lorex FAQ

Common questions answered by our research team.

add Does Lorex require a subscription?
No — Lorex is a one-time purchase security system. All recording is to a local hard drive (included in most systems) with no monthly fees. The Lorex Home app for remote viewing is free. Optional cloud clip backup is available as a subscription add-on.
add How much hard drive storage do I need for my Lorex system?
A 4-camera 4K system recording 24/7 uses approximately 1TB per week. For motion-triggered-only recording, a 2TB drive provides 1-2 months of storage for a 4-camera system. Lorex systems support up to 10TB HDD depending on the model.
add Can I mix Lorex cameras from different generations?
Lorex cameras from the same technology generation (IP PoE or analog) are generally compatible with Lorex NVRs and DVRs. However, mixing old and new generations may result in lost features. Lorex recommends buying matched camera/recorder bundles for guaranteed compatibility.
add How do I access my Lorex system remotely?
Download the Lorex Home app (iOS or Android), enable P2P on your NVR (Setup → Network → P2P), and scan the QR code shown in the NVR's P2P settings. Remote access works over cellular data or any Wi-Fi network without port forwarding.
add What is the difference between a Lorex DVR and NVR system?
DVR (Digital Video Recorder) systems use analog coax cables and are compatible with traditional CCTV cameras. NVR (Network Video Recorder) systems use IP cameras over Ethernet (PoE) and offer higher resolution (up to 4K), more features, and easier cable routing for new installations.
