Fix It Yourself
Try these steps before calling. They resolve the majority of common Google Nest issues.
1
Check for a C-wire if thermostat won't power on
The Nest thermostat needs a C-wire (common wire, usually blue) for continuous power. Without one, the display may go blank between cycles. Google offers a free Nest Power Connector (order at store.google.com) for homes without a C-wire.
2
Relink your Google account for connectivity issues
In Google Home → Settings → Works with Google, find Nest and relink your account. Many offline device issues resolve by refreshing the OAuth token between Google Home and the Nest device service.
3
Enable Home/Away Assist for automatic temperature savings
In the Nest app, enable Home/Away Assist under Settings → Home/Away to automatically adjust temperature based on your phone's location. Google reports average savings of $131/year in energy costs with this feature enabled.
shield Warranty & Coverage
Google Nest devices include a 1-year limited hardware warranty. Nest Aware subscribers get access to extended warranty terms. Google stores also accept returns within 15 days of purchase.
quiz Google Nest FAQ
Common questions answered by our research team.
add What is the difference between Nest and Google Home?
Google Nest is the hardware brand (thermostats, cameras, doorbells, speakers). Google Home is the app used to control all Nest and compatible smart home devices. Think of Nest as the devices and Google Home as the remote control app.
add Does Google Nest work without Wi-Fi?
Nest devices require Wi-Fi to function fully. The Nest thermostat maintains its schedule offline but can't be controlled remotely. Cameras require internet for live view and recording. Alerts, reports, and the Google Home app require an active internet connection.
add Is Google Nest compatible with Amazon Alexa?
Google Nest cameras and displays do not support Alexa natively. You can control Nest thermostats via Alexa using a third-party skill. For the best Google Nest experience, use Google Assistant and Google Home, which support all Nest features.
add Does Nest Cam require a Nest Aware subscription?
Basic Nest Cam features including Live View are free. Nest Aware ($6/month) adds 30-day video history for all cameras. Nest Aware Plus ($12/month) adds 60-day video history plus 10-day 24/7 continuous recording for wired cameras.
add Can I install a Nest thermostat myself?
Yes, Nest thermostat installation is DIY-friendly for most homes. The installation takes 30-60 minutes. The Nest app guides you through wiring. Homes with multi-stage heating, heat pumps, or no C-wire may require a professional installer.
